How to Install an eSIM in 5 Minutes: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you've never used an eSIM before, the whole idea can feel more complicated than it actually is. There's no physical card to swap, no tray to eject with a paperclip — just a QR code and a few taps. Here's what actually happens, start to finish.

1. Buy a plan for your destination

Pick your destination — United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates are common ones — and choose a data plan sized for your trip. Shorter trips usually do fine with a smaller data allowance; longer trips or heavy streaming call for more.

2. Get your QR code

After checkout, you'll get a QR code (usually by email, and in your provider's app if they have one). Keep it handy — you'll need it once, during setup, not every time you connect.

3. Install before you fly

Do this on Wi-Fi, ideally a day or two before you travel, not at the gate. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android, the path is similar: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add SIM → scan the code.

4. Turn on data roaming for the new eSIM line

This is the step people miss. After installation, your eSIM exists as a line, but it won't pull data until you enable "Data Roaming" for that specific eSIM in your cellular settings — your physical SIM stays on for calls/texts, the eSIM handles data.

5. Land and connect

Most eSIMs activate automatically the moment they detect the destination country's network, so there's usually nothing else to do when you land — just check you have a signal and you're online.
